Depends on your expectations and where you are at in your art career. You will probably have to have some sort of part time work at the beginning. Most artists make a decent living, enough to keep working, and a few make a lot of money from it. It's not steady money like a salaried job and you will spend a lot of your time marketing your work. If you love to make art its definitely a good idea.
