How do you liven up a worn out carpet?

I just moved into a small house and one of the rooms has an old carpet in it that is pretty worn down, although it looks like it may have a chance. The floor underneath looks horrible and since I can't afford a new carpet at this time, I was hoping to just keep this one and liven it up. Does anyone have any tips?
